Margaret Oakes

We wish all the best to longtime LAS member Margaret Oakes, who has recently suffered a broken hip and ankle in a fall and is currently recovering in Ludlow hospital - she's doing well, but her activities have been notably curtailed. Anyone who'd like to wish her well should ring the hospital, or drop by during visiting hours (but do ring ahead first, as she will eventually be moved to Woofferton).

Spotlight - Roman Mars Talks Flags

Spotlight tries to cover a wide range of subjects, briefly illuminating various techniques, moments in art history, specific artists and, sometimes, opinion pieces.

This month we have one of those opinion pieces, from US radio host and digital storyteller Roman Mars in his TED talk titled, 'Why city flags may be the worst-designed thing you've never noticed'.

The blurb from the talk reads: 'Roman Mars is obsessed with flags — and after you watch this talk, you might be, too. These ubiquitous symbols of civic pride are often designed, well, pretty terribly. But they don't have to be. In this surprising and hilarious talk about vexillology — the study of flags — Mars reveals the five basic principles of flag design and shows why he believes they can be applied to just about anything.'

Upcoming - Ginn Downes Talk

On Thursday 2nd July we have guest artist Ginn Downes visiting us to talk about her work as a mixed media and textile artist. She says:

"I have been sewing, creating textile and art pieces all my life and strongly believe that "creativity feeds the soul". I was trained in Fashion and Textiles but have a love of all things creative.  During the past 29 years, I have been fortunate to teach students of a wide age range and for 11 years, enjoyed running the Textiles Department at Hereford 6th Form College.

I now run my own creative workshops, which include art and textiles techniques to sewing methods. I am passionate that everyone should be given the opportunity to discover their own creative potential and my new venture enables me to re-kindle a passion to create my own artwork, as well as enabling others to do the same."

Ginn has kindly sent along a few examples of her work ahead of her talk, which will be mainly about the process of using art, drawing, painting, etc, and translating it into textile pieces:

The talk is at our usual time, so please arrive 7pm for 7.30pm, The Studio in Ludlow Assembly Rooms, and it's £3 for members, £4 for guests.

See you there!

Sketch Trip to Visit the SAS

On Saturday 11th July, we have a sketch trip to see the Shropshire Art Society during their exhibition at St Mary's church. We'll aim to get there between 10am and 10.30am, and will be met by members of the SAS. SAS members attending will be paying their usual £2 for the event which will go to St Mary's, and I'm sure they would appreciate a similar donation from any LAS members, although the exhibition itself is free.

Here's what happened when the SAS came to Ludlow earlier in the year: The SAS visit Ludlow

LAS Artists' Market Stall Day Two Called Off

Unfortunately, due to a shortage of Fringe gazebos, the LAS's second day at the Market Stall has been called off.

We apologise to any members who had displayed or were looking to display their work on our stall, and we will be taking the matter up with the Fringe.

Pictures from Tom Crowe's Talk

Tom gave us a brief explanation of how the idea of GPS art came to him, taking us through his artistic inspirations and how he looks at a fusion of traditional art and technology as the future of creativity, and certainly the wellspring of his ideas. He explained how to work the ViewRanger app, and how to plot routes that would make striking large-scale linework-based art - then challenged us to take it up ourselves as part of the GPS Art Competition run by the LAS and the Fringe.

Here are some pictures of the evening:

Join us for our next talk on July 2nd, when Ginn Downes will be giving us a talk on textiles and mixed media work!

In the meantime, though, why not be a part of our Artists' Market selling stall this weekend? All details are on the 'What's On' section at the top of this page.

Upcoming - GPS Art

On Thursday 18th Jun, we welcome LAS Treasurer Tom Crowe as our guest speaker for our evening talk. You may remember Tom giving us a talk and demo on the subject of iPad artback in May 2013, but this time he's back with a different look at technology.

For his talk, 'GPS Art', Tom's going to show you how to create satellite-tracked GPS Art on your iPhone or Android device using the free ViewRanger app. This talk is a little different from our regular ones, as it's in association with the Ludlow Fringe Festival and it's also tied in with an LAS event we're running for the Fringe - the GPS Art Competition, which you can find out about right here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1451983248449242/
It's great fun, and there are fantastic prizes to be won!

The talk is at our usual time, so please arrive 7pm for 7.30pm Ludlow Assembly Rooms, and it's £3 for members, £4 for guests.

For this talk we're in Oscars instead of the Studio.

See you there!

LAS Stall Needs Stewards

The Ludlow Fringe Artists' Market is taking place this coming weekend, and the Ludlow Art Society needs stewards for our stall. We're dividing the shifts into four - Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon, and looking for two people per shift.

If you'd like to help us out, then please drop me a line at samsketches@yahoo.co.uk with which shift you'd be able to cover.

Don't forget, if you'd like to put your work up to exhibit and sell on the stall it's £1 per picture, and you can put in any unframed work (browsers, box canvases, etc, but not cards). There's no commission so you take 100% of any sales, and once again there are no restrictions on showing previously-exhibited work.
Surrounding the LAS's pitch will be a host of other artists' stalls, and nearby there'll be some screeving taking place just outside the College, so Castle Square will be busy, bustling and full of art!

The entry form is right HERE.
Note re. the form: if bringing your artwork along for two days in a row is troublesome, let us know and we'll store your pieces safely overnight for you.

More upcoming events!

We have three things to update you with, this morning!

-----     -----     -----

Firstly, looking forward to Saturday 11th July, we have a return sketch trip to see the Shropshire Art Society during their exhibition at St Mary's church.

-----     -----     -----

The next update is a reminder about our Artists' Market stall on the weekend of 20th and 21st June! We're doing the same thing we did last year - for £1 per picture you can put any unframed work (browsers, box canvases, etc, but not cards) up for sale. There's no commission so you take 100% of any sales, and once again there are no restrictions on showing previously-exhibited work.
Now, surrounding the LAS' pitch will be a host of other artists' stalls, and nearby there'll be some screeving taking place just outside the College, so Castle Square will be busy, bustling and full of art!

Note: if bringing your artwork along for two days in a row is troublesome, let us know and we'll store your pieces safely overnight for you!

The entry form is right here: LAS Artists' Market Stall Entry Form

-----     -----     -----

The final update is about our next plein air trip, coming up this week on Thursday 11th June

We're holding the day at a place called Holmcroft, Brimfield, near Ludlow, SY8 4NW. It's owned by Mr and Mrs Michael, and it's being specially opened up to the LAS from 11am. Normally there's an entry fee but (I believe) not for us this time, however donations to the National Gardens Scheme are most welcome.

It's 4 miles south of Ludlow, 6 miles north of Leominster. From Ludlow or Leominster leave the A49 at the Salway Arms PH, turn into lane signed Wyson only. From Tenbury Wells cross the A49 into Wyson Lane.

Now, for some details - there's a thatched cottage set in terraced gardens of 3/4 acre, quintessential cottage garden planting - roses, herbaceous borders, kitchen, gravel and woodland gardens all with spectacular views of surrounding countryside. Only the woodland walk is inaccessible for wheelchairs.

It sounds fantastic, hopefully the weather will be fine, and we can get a good number of us out there painting this Thursday!

Thank you to Lesley Connolly for organising the event.

GPS Art Competition

During the Fringe, the LAS is proud to announce that we're running an exciting event called the GPS (Global Positioning System) Art Competition! You can find all the details on the Facebook event page HERE (you do not need to have registered for Facebook to read the link), but in case that link doesn't work for you here's all the information from the press release:

-----     -----     -----

Art can be many things, and with GPS Art you become the brush and the land your canvas!

To create GPS Art, you download a free app called Viewranger onto your Android or iOS device (tablet or iphone) and you can then use this app to 'draw' an image using your GPS track - the bigger the better!
The possibilities are boundless - so, we thought we'd run, as part of the Ludlow Fringe Festival, a GPS Art Competition for ViewRanger users. There will be two competitions - one for adults and one for the under 18's.
Note: You do not need a mobile connection to do this!

So, why not have a go? Make your next walk or bike ride a work of art!

To participate you need to 1) enroll and 2) receive a registration code.
Enrollment can be done at an Art Society meeting taking place 7.30pm Thursday 18th June at the Ludlow Assembly Rooms, where we’ll over the technology and the competition in detail.

The normal talk fee (£3 for Art Society members £4 for non-members, under 18’s free) gives you the right to submit your pictures. You can also enroll during the Fringe Festival at the Fringe Kiosk in Castle Square (£2 for adults and free for under-18’s) any time before July 2nd.

GPS Art WINS PRIZES! Here’s how:

Record your planned track using the ViewRanger app.
When you have walked, cycled or run the route rename the image using this format:

ludlow/[your name]/[reg code]/[picture title]
eg ludlow/smith/123/rugbycircles

Export your masterpiece to my.viewranger at the ViewRanger website.

We’ll be judging towards the end of the Fringe, and awarding prizes to the most creative entries!

But... what's on offer? Well, here’s what your creativity can win:

For the over-18’s, the winner will receive:
£100 in Apple Vouchers
£25 in ViewRanger vouchers
A ViewRanger buff

For the over-18’s, the winner will receive:
£50 in Apple Vouchers
£25 in ViewRanger vouchers
A ViewRanger buff

Thanks to our sponsors ViewRanger and PerfectArc for putting up these fantastic prizes!

-----

How to create great GPS art:

Think large scale and work over a large area.
Plot the route in advance on my.viewranger, so once you’re outside all you need do is follow it.

You have until July 2nd to submit your masterpiece!

If you have any questions, please direct them via email to Tom Crowe at tomcrowe1@yahoo.com

-----     -----     -----

There will soon be a regular LAS event poster emailed to all members, with further details about the GPS Talk on Thursday 18th June.
