LAS Mascall Centre Gallery

The Pea Green Cafe, which has just opened at the Mascall Centre, is now proudly displaying work from LAS members Pat Innes, Trevor Innes, Ruth Tune, Janet Breese and Elizabeth Moss - these pieces are for sale.

The plan is to change the display every couple of months, so places will be available again in the future! If you're interested in being part of this exhibition space then do get in touch with the curator, Pat Innes, at patricia@innesbooks.co.uk, and you can be put on the list for when it's changed.

Spotlight - How to See Tone

This month, Spotlight takes a look at how to see tone. In an article on the Artists and Illustrators site, Siân Dudley explains exactly what tone is, why it can sometimes be confusing when trying to assess it, and what you can do to make things clearer.
Note: although not in this article, tone is often also referred to as 'value'.

You can find the article HERE, and you can find Siân Dudley's website HERE.

If you know any great art websites or articles, why not share them here? Send your suggestions to samsketches@yahoo.co.uk - please note that this isn't for self-promotion.

Reminder - 8th April SAS Sketch Visit

A quick reminder - on 8th April members of the Shropshire Art Society will visit the LAS, meeting at about 10.30am at the Harley Centre where our Spring Exhibition will be running, and then we'll all head out and sketch around the town together.

We haven't done an event like this before, and it's a wonderful opportunity to draw and chat with members of a different Art Society. Also, we have a visit organised to see the SAS in July - details to come.

Many thanks to LAS and SAS Member Catherine Downes for suggesting and helping organise this trip - I hope to see you there!

LAS Call to Arms - SCREEVERS

Are you a chalk artist?

LAS Mascall Centre Exhibition

The LAS has been invited to decorate the walls of the new Mascall Centre cafe with our pictures!

The show will open very soon (the cafe haven't set a firm date yet, but the picture rail will be up tomorrow) so if you're interested in having your artwork displayed on their walls, or if you have any questions, please contact Pat Innes at patricia@innesbooks.co.uk - Pat will be curating the exhibition.

This is an excellent opportunity to have your work displayed for an extended period of time in a new location, and, considering footfall, many groups use the Centre - don't miss out!

This may be of interest to LAS members (click to enlarge):

You can find the event details HERE, and Matt's website HERE.

LAS Call to Arms - GAZEBOS

Do you have a waterproof gazebo, or know someone who does?

The Fringe Artists' Market is gathering pace (the LAS will have a stall there - details coming soon!) but some more gazebos are needed. If you have one, and would be willing to help out by letting us borrow it for use on 20th and 21st June for the Market, that would be fantastic!

If you can help, please drop me a line - samsketches@yahoo.co.uk

Thank you!

George Loades in the Ludlow Ledger

Do you recall a mention to keep a close eye on the next couple of Ludlow Ledgers? If you turn to pages 18 and 19 of the latest Ledger (issue 6), you'll see a painting that may be familiar - George Loades' award-winning watercolour Above Dhustone. Well done, George!

My photo here isn't the greatest, but if you pick up a copy of the paper (it's free!), you can check it out for yourself.

Pictures from the 2015 AGM's Show and Tell

The AGM went well, and minutes will be available to all LAS members soon. Ruth and George will be formally stepping down during this year, and Anne Fox, Pat Innes and Dru Cole were accepted onto the Committee. Tom Crowe announced that this will be his last year as Treasurer.
The show and tell was excellent, and was kicked off by our new President, Charles MacCarthy, who brought along a couple of his paintings and explained why he used what he did, and the inspiration behind the pieces.

Here are some pictures (and thank you to Jean Simnett for providing the snack table!) from the show and tell session:

Charles MacCarthy with his paintings

Anne Fox talks about her still life

Alan Hobbs describes painting his watercolour

Samuel Bebb's acrylics of his children (Lesley Connolly helping to hold them up)

Dave Tedham explains how he makes his abstract works

Jean Simnett show us her mosaic tray (apologies for the poor photo quality)

Annie Day's pencil pictures

Ruth Tune's illustrations

Next month, on 2nd April, we have Paul Hipkiss RBSA returning, this time to give us a talk on printing techniques. Then, on 3rd April, we hang our Spring Exhibition and have the Private View. After that, on 8th April, we have a visit from the Shopshire Art Society.

See you on the 2nd!
