Spotlight - Paul Klee, and Art You Don't Like

Paul Klee, Head of Man, 1922

This month, Spotlight takes a look at an article penned by author \ award-winning veteran illustrator William O'Connor (website HERE) back over at Muddy Colors, in which he talks briefly about the artist Paul Klee. What makes this different is that O'Connor doesn't like Klee's work at all, in fact he "can't stand it," but this is far from a hatchet piece. It's worth reading the discussion in the comments, too.

What do you think? Is there an artist or style of art that is generally very popular, but which you particularly dislike?

You can find the link to the article HERE.

If you know any great art websites or articles, why not share them here? Send your suggestions to samsketches@yahoo.co.uk - please note that this isn't for self-promotion.

Update on the Members' Facebook Page

A quick note on this - the idea is still moving forward, but has been put back by a month or so. However, keep an eye out after the Spring Exhibition (and you should be receiving your entry forms any day now!) for when we unveil the LAS Facebook group.

Exhibition Opportunity!

There's wall space going at the Chang Thai, if anybody's interested - you can get in touch with them on 01584 874212 or  you can message them on their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/globe.thai

I'd jump on it quickly, though, this'll be booked quickly.

However if you do miss it don't worry, we may have something coming up soon, and also of course it's our Spring Exhibition from 3rd - 13th April! Entry forms for this will be with you very soon.

Upcoming - LAS AGM

Are you interested in joining the LAS? Could you help on our Committee? We welcome all members and prospective members to the LAS Annual General Meeting. As always it's in the Studio at the Assembly Rooms. Please arrive 7pm for 7.30pm, and there is NO CHARGE for this evening.

We will have an Agenda to present to you very shortly, and we are specifically looking to fill the position of Publicity Secretary, and this year will be our Treasurer, Tom's Crowe's, last year on the Committee so we're also looking for someone to step in sometime this year and begin the transition.

In addition, we invite all our members to bring along a piece of their work to briefly talk about after the AGM is concluded. Show us all what you've been up to!

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. See you there!

New LAS President

LAS President Keith Noble is stepping down from his post after 6 years with us. Keith has given us some wonderful demonstrations and has been an inspiring presence in our exhibitions - we're very sorry to see him go, and wish him all the best for the future.

However, stepping up as our new President is Hereford-based artist Charles MacCarthy! Charles has been exhibiting with at Silk Top Hat on and off since 2002, and in fact he has an exhibition coming up with them at the end of April. You can read more about Charles on his STH's artist's page HERE.

More details to come!

It's worth keeping a close eye on the next couple of editions... details are still being confirmed, but one of the prize-winning pictures from our last exhibition may be making it into the next edition, and an article penned by our Secretary, Pat Innes, should be appearing in the one after that.

Pictures from Lesley Connolly's Talk

We kicked off our 2015 programme with a packed room (we needed to bring in extra chairs!)Lesley began by talking a little about her materials - the fixatives, papers, and of course the pastels. She explained her methods of working on animals pictures using grids and photographs, and the differences between just copying and creating a piece of artwork. Then, using steps she'd prepared earlier (actually all prepared that afternoon) she took us through a painting from initial drawing through to a finished picture.

Some pictures from the evening:

Join us next month, on March 5th, for our AGM (details coming soon).
