Logo Competition!

You all know our logo by now, don't you?

Well, we think it could do with being updated, perhaps made more colourful, and that's where you come in... we're holding a contest to design our new logo! After all, this is a society of artists! :)

There are a few rules, but they're pretty simple:
  • Keep it roughly similar in dimensions to the current one (but squared, or rotated to landscape would be fine) - nothing very long and thin or tall and wide, please! Having said that, feel free to be creative with the shape.
  • It's got to look good when seen both larger and smaller.
  • Feel free to make alterations to our current logo, or come up with something totally new.
  • You may submit as many entries as you like.
  •  It should include the words 'Ludlow Art Society'
  • You must be an LAS member to enter this contest.
  • This is open media - no restrictions here.

How will the contest work?
  • Entries, preferably in .jpg form, are to be sent to samsketches@yahoo.co.uk (I'm not allowed to enter!)
  • I will take the designs and show them, with no names given, to the rest of the Committee.
  • The Committee will decide the winning entry, which will become our new logo.
We'll have a month for this - the deadline is 11.59pm on Saturday 31st May.

Alright then, let's see what you can come up with!

Spotlight - Perspective Errors

This month, Spotlight's taking a look at perspective - the article 10 Typical Perspective Errors covers... go on, have a guess :)

Here's the link: http://helpyoudraw.tumblr.com/post/81390002414/10-typical-perspective-errors

If you know any great art websites or articles, why not share them here? Send your suggestions to samsketches@yahoo.co.uk - please note that this isn't for self-promotion.

Rob Leckey Talk - Reminder!

A quick reminder for you - we do not meet on the first Thursday of the month in May, we meet on the second Thursday to avoid the May Fair.

Our guest speaker will be Rob Leckey, a long-time LAS member and a man whose work you may have seen in our Spring Exhibition. If you didn't catch that, you can get an idea of his work by taking a look at his website, right here: http://robleckeyart.com/

He's also kindly sent along these images:

Cheers, Rob!

Friday Group's Life Drawing

The Friday Group's Life Drawing classes will soon be coming to an end for the season - but don't worry, they'll be back again later in the year.

There will be no class on Friday 2nd May, due to the May Fair closing the Assembly Rooms. The last class will be on 30th May.

There will soon be a list of the Friday Group's summer plein air trips - keep your eyes peeled for it!

Paint Jam

One of the events coming up at the Ludlow Fringe is the Paint Jam, bringing street art to Castle Square!

Some of these people may be familiar to you - you already know myself, Lesley and Chris Bean, then we've got Mike Flight who gave our most recent talk, and he showed us some of the work of one of his former students, Deeds.

If you want a little more information, you can listen to this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01wvd0k

2 hours and 16 minutes in, Ludlow Fringe Art Trail coordinator Frances Newman and I talk to BBC Radio Shropshire's Jim Hawkins about what we're organising for the Fringe. This is only up for 7 days, though!

Local MP Philip Dunne was due to formally open the show, but a travel delay meant we had to begin without him - however, he was in time to make his Judge's Choice in the main show (Rob Leckey's 'Conwy from the Town Walls'), and to judge the smArt kids' table (Louis Lawley's work was Highly Commended, and first prize went to Maddie Bayliss). The Silk Top Hat prize was awarded to Catherine Downes' 'St Justinians', and the Castle Bookshop prize will be awarded soon!

Pictures from Mike Flight's Talk

Mike brought along several pieces of work, preparatory sketches and stencils and a Jimi Hendrix-themed canvas and folding door. He explained a little about how far back in history stenciling goes, and covered his preferred approach of still keeping a painterly feel about his work despite working with stencils. Below are some pictures from the evening:

To attribute artists correctly, in the bottom left picture the Boy George artwork Mike's holding was done by Pistol Art, and the Heisenberg / Walter White artwork on the table was done by Deeds, a former student of Mike's.

Mike, Deeds, myself, Lesley Connolly, Chris Bean and 5 others will be taking part in a day-long Paint Jam (public painting on 6ft x 3ft boards) in Castle Square on Sunday 15th June as part of the Ludlow Fringe Festival.

Next month, on May 8th (to avoid the May Fair), we have Rob Leckey giving us a talk on watercolour and acrylic mixed media paintings. I'll see you there, but hopefully I'll see you before that at the private view of our Spring Exhibition at 5.30pm, Friday 11th, at the Harley Centre!

LAS Stall at the Fringe Artists' Market!

Here comes another opportunity to exhibit your work! On the 28th and 29th June the Ludlow Fringe's Artists' Market is running, and of course the LAS has a stall. Last year we invited you to put in your browsers, but this year we're opening it up - both browsers and unframed canvases can be exhibited on the stall for just £1 each, and there's no commission taken.

You can find the form below, and it's also on our Membership and Exhibition Forms page.
