Spotlight - Muddy Colors: Composition Basics: Sketching Thumbnails

This month, Spotlight is looking at the foundation of creating compositions - the thumbnail sketch. Going back to the Muddy Colors blog, this is illustrator Dan Dos Santos' method for finding a strong and clear thumbnail. It's his approach to sketching for a client, but it's a great way to establish a strong beginning for any piece. It's also worth looking at his post on Value Structure, linked to in the article below, but I'll also provide a link here.

Here's the link: http://muddycolors.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/composition-basics-sketching-thumbnails.html

If you know any great art websites or articles, why not share them here? Send your suggestions to samsketches@yahoo.co.uk - please note that this isn't for self-promotion!

Art Series on Portrait Painting

Many thanks to Ruth Tune for forwarding this email. It may be of interest to Members:

Storyvault Films are currently working on a new art series for a major broadcaster that will centre around portrait painting. Filming for the series will take place this summer in eight cities around the UK and Ireland, ready for broadcast in the Autumn. The key element to the series is a competition for portrait painters in each city, along with a grand final. The competition is open to all artists, from the well-established to emerging talent to hobbyists. Each artist will apply to the city nearest their home and a group of artists will then be selected to take part in the competition within that city.

If you think you might be interested it would be great if you could send me a photo of yourself, short biography including any hobbies/interests/family life/anything you think might be interesting as well as a link to your work. This is purely for my own records as I am trying to get to know a little about who each artist is.

Alternatively, if you are able to pass on this information to any groups and artists you think may be interested that would be a great help. Please feel free to get in contact if you need any more information.

I look forward to hearing from you and many thanks.

Best wishes,
Harriet Mathams
