The last Spotlight of 2013 takes a look at Light in Cinema, which briefly explores some effective lighting and colour arrangements, techniques which are equally applicable to creating the right mood in your paintings.

LAS Fringe 2014 Update

A few points were discussed at last Wednesday's Fringe 2014 meeting, with the main points being:

  • There'll be an expanded Art Trail this year, possibly with a registration fee and commission taken to help make the Trail more self-sustaining.
  • The LAS' Art Market will return, with the possibility of portrait sketching taking place alongside the market.
  • We may have a paint jam this year - artists working outdoors on large boards.
  • Starting on Tuesday 3rd December, and every other Tuesday after that, there'll be an informal meeting for anyone who wants to be involved with the Fringe. This will take place at the Sitting Room, just above the Thai Box. I don't have an exact time, but I'd guess from about 7.30pm.

A lot is still up in the air (hence the 'may' and 'possibility'!), but it's beginning to come together. I'll keep you updated as things develop.

Spotlight - Duotone Illustrations

This month, Spotlight's taking a look at duotone illustrations, courtesy of the Muddy Colors blog. From the post: "Duotone is a printing process by which an image is created using just two colors. Traditionally, it is created by applying a single color halftone (usually blue, red or yellow) over a black halftone. Whites are achieved through the use of the paper's surface. The printing process is very simple, and extremely cost effective, making it a popular choice for projects where budget is a major concern, like newspapers and classic pulp magazines."

Upcoming - Rachel Ricketts Talk

On Thursday 7th November we have sculptor Rachel Ricketts coming along to give us a talk entitled "Sleeping Horse.  From concept to completion." Rachel has sent along a photo of one of her pieces, to give us an idea of her work:

Undiscovered Artist

The LAS recently received an email from a gentleman called William Jones, from Undiscovered Artist. He's inviting members of the LAS to sell their work on his website (www.undiscoveredartist.co.uk), which he says places emphasis on selling original and affordable art. There's no listing fee, and commission is 20%. Only original art is accepted. He can be contacted at William@undiscoveredartist.co.uk.

I haven't had any further contact, so I can't say anything one way or the other about this - I'm forwarding this as I was asked to.

Redirected?

If you've tried to go to www.ludlowartsociety.org.uk then you've probably found yourself redirected here (or at least, you will soon). You may have noticed that some of the old pages on the website have been moved over, and now we're looking to just run this blog.

Hopefully there won't be any technical issues with this, but, if there are, please drop me a line at samsketches@yahoo.co.uk and I'll try to resolve them as soon as I can.

Tech news

It's working again! What's On has been updated with Silk Top Hat exhibitions, Art! Squad news and the final LAS evening meeting of the year.

Saturday, 5 October 2013

Tech note

What's On cannot be updated right now, as Blogger isn't allowing any changes to text boxes to be saved - Google are looking into this, so hopefully I should soon be able to update as usual.

Pictures from Chris Bean's 'Drawing in the Round' Evening

I'm afraid I can't really say anything about the evening, as I couldn't make it (a real shame, I felt - Chris is a very good teacher, and it's always great fun and excellent practice to draw from life).

Here are some pictures from the evening, courtesy of Tom Crowe:

Next month, on 7th November, we have our final talk of 2013! Rachel Ricketts is coming along to give us a talk on sculpture - see you there!

The Big Art Show in 2014

Here's a copy of an email I received recently from a chap called David Dawkins (I think this has been mentioned before...) . This may be of interest to some of you:

"
Dear Artist,

I am still looking for artists of all mediums.

So far I now have 90 artists exhibiting at The Big Art Show, we are also having various classical musicians playing throughout  the day, as well artists talking about their work and giving demonstrations, plus work shops and a camera obscurer. plus a many more things which are in the pipe line. You can check out the artists on my website, or click on photo's on my facebook page "Dawkins Art"

Kind Regards
David Dawkins

Information about the show

My name is David Dawkins I am a glass artist and the organiser of The Big Art Show www.thebigartshow.co.uk which is taking place next year on 19th and 20th July 2014 in Shrewsbury Shropshire. The show will be on a 55 acre site and will have 250-300 exhibiting artists. My main objective is to provide affordable exhibiting spaces for high end craft designers and artists to sell their work. I am personally finding that exhibition spaces are becoming more expensive, and with the rising cost of energy a lot of artists are finding it hard to survive. Exhibition spaces -3m x 3m if you have your own gazebo/tent £120 for two days, and 2m x 2m inside a marque £150. Extras--- Tables £7.50. Electric £8.50. Screens two per person £24 each A marque space with electric, and two screens (compulsory) would cost £206.50 (unless you have your own screens)

The Big Art Show, I hope the show to be more like a Art Spectacular, something a bit different than conventional art shows, with classical music and theatre, that will bring art enthusiasts from all over England to enjoy and buy art.

If you are interested. You can find all the information you need on my web site www.thebigartshow.co.uk To secure a place you need to register this costs £10 for this you get a web page on my site for one year then you stay on my files for future show, you need to download 3 pictures of your work( no more than 600 x 800 pixels) plus a brief statement about you work. ( the £10 covers my costs). Once registered I will be in touch late December for payment.

Kind Regards,
David Dawkins.

Exhibitions:

The Art of George Stubbs
Saturday 29th June – Wednesday 25th Sept

The Granary Art Gallery is showcasing three of the finest paintings by great British equestrian artist George Stubbs (1724 - 1806).

Best known for his paintings of horses and conservation pieces, the selected works include Stubb's The Grosvenor Hunt (1762), Mares and Foals (1768) and Lord Pigott of Patshull (1769).  Having studied equine anatomy, Stubbs' paintings demonstrate a realism that eclipsed other equestrian artists of the time.

Recent Paintings and Drawings by Lance Fennell
Saturday 30th August – Sunday 29th September

Milton Keynes based artist Lance Fennel is currently exhibiting in the Granary Art Gallery throughout September.  Lance paints scenes such as highways, seascapes, landscapes, office interiors and petrol stations.

Using oil paint as his main medium, Lance paints highly detailed and accurate images which have a superb realist quality.  Another unique factor about Lance's work, is the way in which he incorporates the frame moldings as part of the image, with the intention of  representing areas which may not have normally be included.

Recent Work by Lisa Henderson and Philip Huckin
Saturday 30th August – Sunday 29th September

We welcome two landscape artists to the Granary Art Gallery for a selling exhibition of their recent works throughout October 2013.

Lisa Henderson uses a variety of materials to echo the landscape.  Her paintings, which incorporate collaged recycled and pre-prepared papers, drawings in chalks or graphite, and collagraphs, celebrate pattern and the idiosyncrasies of sight. To achieve patination, she applies techniques often associated with printmaking such as wiping and scratching to achieve the crisp qualities her work possesses.

Philip Huckin will be exhibiting a selection of his highly detailed landscape drawings and paintings, many of which are based on the Welsh countryside.   His attention to colour and clarity are clearly shown in his paintings; the use of light and shadow, along with his ability to illustrate depth with varying tones create uplifting images for any home.

Pictures from Chris Saunderson's talk

Chris explained his process of preparing surfaces with various textures and random applications of paint, and then seeing what animal forms might suggest themselves in the board. He then took a prepared board and began bringing out the form of a snow leopard. Here are some pictures from the evening (click to enlarge):

Next month, on 3rd October, we have Life Drawing organiser Chris Bean coming along to lead an evening of drawing in the round - you'll need some paper and pens / pencils for this one, but it should be great fun!
